Artist Statement
We have been asked to create an artist statement in order to show and explain our ideas and practice as photographers. We are suggesting plans and proposals for the remainder of unit 1to lead towards a mini project or final piece.
As an artist I see the world in more of a straightforward and mundane way, yet I like the mystery hidden within shapes and lines either in architecture, landscapes or human profiles. I myself, would prefer to obscure the meaning and make the viewer look deeper into the photo to find an underlining significance. Having said that, I am very open to many types of photography, however have taken a turn towards more geometric and simple photos with an obvious subject, yet I also am keen and interested the art of double exposure although not truly experimenting too much with this.
When documenting reality through photography, I take an approach in the direction of revealing the truth and showing straightforward reality instead of concealing it behind or within the photo. Although sometimes posing interesting photos, the natural world does not actually interest me as much as man made, cityscapes or human faces. I feel that if something was placed in a certain way by man, then that holds more questioning and curiosity than if something grew just by nature or the natural world. On top of this, I am more partial to black and white work which I personally think looks more effective when applied to man made areas as it effectively highlights contrast within a photo. When creating the images, I work lens based and take into consideration the light surrounding and play around with contrasting light intensities. I feel like I need to experiment more with light however before producing final images. I also find interest in playing around with the rule of thirds and obscuring the focus of the main subject.
I feel the purpose of my work is to evoke curiosity and entertain the viewer visually, despite photographing normal and everyday buildings, objects and common visual items, I feel that the way I perceive the image can also be conveyed through the photo and lets the viewer question why and how I managed to capture the subject in a certain way.
